Fade In:

A ship sails in to view out of the fog. We close in on a young girl, ELIZABETH SWANN, standing at the front. She is softly singing.

Elizabeth:
(Singing)...we rifle and loot
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot
Drink up me hearties, yo ho

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a pirate's life for me
We extort, we pilfer we filch and sack
Drink up...

She gasps as some grabs at her shoulder. The man is MR GIBBS.

Gibbs:
Quiet, missy! Cursed pirates sail these waters. You don’t want to bring them down on us now, do you?

A young man, LIEUTENANT NORRINGTON steps up, followed by GOVERNOR SWANN.

Norrington:
Mr Gibbs! That will do.

Gibbs:
She was singing about pirates. Bad luck to be singing about pirates with us mired in this unnatural fog, mark my words.

Norrington:
Consider them marked. On your way.

Gibbs:
Aye, Lieutenant. (Walks off) It’s bad luck to have a woman on board too. Even a miniature one.

Elizabeth:
I think it would be rather exciting to meet a pirate.

Norrington:
Think again, Miss Swann. Vile and dissolute creatures the lot of them. I intend to see to it that any man who sails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deserves. A short drop and a sudden stop.

Elizabeth clearly doesn’t understand this. She looks to Gibbs who mimes being hanged. She gasps in horror.

Governor Swann:
Lieutenant Norrington, I appreciate your fervor but I’m concerned about the effect this subject will have on my daughter.

Norrington:
My apologies, Governor Swann. (Leaves)

Elizabeth:
Actually I find it all fascinating!

Governor Swann:
Yes, that’s what concerns me.

He leaves too. Elizabeth looks back out to water to see a parasol floating towards the ship. She follows its progress until she looks back to see a raft of wood with a boy laying on it.

Elizabeth:
Look! A boy! There’s a boy in the water!

The others rush to see.

Norrington:
Man overboard! (Organising the men) Man your ropes. Fetch a hook. Haul him aboard.

They pull the boy aboard.

Gibbs:
(Looking out over the sea) Mary, mother of God!

People rush forward to see the burning remains of a ship.

Governor Swann:
What happened here?

Norrington:
It was most likely the powder magazine. Merchant vessels run heavily armed.

Gibbs:
Lot of good it did them...(Off Norrington’s look) Everybody’s thinking it, I’m just saying it. Pirates.

Governor Swann:
Well, that’s....There’s no proof of that. It was probably an accident.

Elizabeth wanders over to the boy.

Norrington:
Rouse the Captain immediately.

Sailor:
Aye, sir.

Norrington:
Heave too and take in sail. Launch the boats.

Governor Norrington:
Elizabeth, I want you to accompany the boy. He’ll be in your charge. Take care of him.

The launch boats row out towards the wreckage as Elizabeth walks up to the unconscious boy. She strokes his head softly. He wakes up with a sudden gasp and grabs at her hand.

Elizabeth:
It’s okay. My name’s Elizabeth Swann.

Will:
(Panicking and confused) Will Turner.

Elizabeth:
I’m watching over you, Will.

He faints once more. Curiously she picks up the medallion he is wearing round his neck.

Elizabeth:
You’re a pirate!

Norrington:
Has he said anything.

Elizabeth:
(Hiding the medallion) His name’s William Turner. That’s all I’ve found out.

Norrington:
(To some men) Take him below.

They move to do so. Elizabeth looks out to sea again, taking to examine the medallion more closely. In the fog a ship with tattered black sails is seen heading away. Elizabeth’s eyes widen as she spots the pirate flag.
