A boat sails towards Port Royal, with a man standing on its mast. This is CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW. He looks out to his destination, a strong wind whipping is hair around. He looks down before sliding to the deck on a rope. His feet land in water - the small boat is sinking. He uses a bucket to bail out the water, pausing only to remove his hat in a salute of respect when he sees the corpses of hanged pirates dangling under a sign proclaiming ‘Pirates Ye Be Warned’. At the dock people are going about their business but are stunned into silence as they see Jack sail into the port, standing on the mast of his now almost completely submerged boat. He steps straight off onto the deck and is stopped by the harbourmaster.

Harbourmaster:
(As Jack walks past him) Hold up there you! It’s a shilling to tie up your boat at the dock.

They both turn to look at the boat, now with just the tip of the mast and the crow’s nest visible.

Harbourmaster:
And I shall need to know your name.

Jack:
What do you say to three shillings and you forget the name?

Harbourmaster:
Welcome to Port Royal, Mr Smith.

They part and Jack carries on his way. At the end of the dock he finds a purse which he promptly takes.

Cut To:

Fort Charles. The earlier mentioned ceremony is in full swing. Soldiers march, a band plays, the British flag flies high. Many rich people are there to watch including Elizabeth who is looking very uncomfortable in the corset.

Cut To:

The dock. Jack looks over at the Interceptor. He turns to check no one is watching then heads towards it.

Cut To:

The ceremony. A soldier barks out orders as other men form a guard of honour for Commodore Norrington to walk down. The sun beats down more hotly and Elizabeth fans herself. Governor Swann meanwhile is presenting Norrington with the sword that Will brought earlier. Norrington checks it as Elizabeth begins to look more and more uncomfortable.

Cut To:

The dock. Jack walks down the stairs and towards the ship. He is stopped by two soldiers, Murtogg and Mullroy.

Murtogg:
This dock is off limits to civilians.

Jack:
I’m terribly sorry, I didn’t know. If I see one I shall inform you immediately. (He goes to move but they step back in front of him) Apparently there’s some high toned and fancy to-do up at the fort, eh? How can it be that two up standing gentlemen such as yourselves did not merit an invitation?

Murtogg:
Someone has to make sure this dock stays off limits to civilians.

Jack:
It’s a fine goal, to be sure. But it seems to me (he moves and they shuffle in front of him) that a ship like that (he indicates the Dantless) makes this one here a bit superfluous really.

Murtogg:
Oh, the Dauntless is the power in these waters, true enough. But there’s no ship as can match the Interceptor for speed.

Jack:
I’ve heard of one. S’posed to be very fast. Nigh uncatchable. The Black Pearl.

The soldiers laugh.

Mullroy:
Oh, there’s no real ship that can match the Interceptor.

Murtogg:
The Black Pearl is a real ship.

Mullroy:
No. No, it’s not.

Murtogg:
Yes it is. I’ve seen it.

Mullroy:
You’ve seen it?

Murtogg:
Yes.

Mullroy:
You haven’t seen it!

Murtogg:
Yes, I have!

Mullroy:
You’ve seen the ship with black sails that’s crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil, hell itself spat him back out?

Murtogg:
No.

Mullroy:
No.

Murtogg:
But I have seen a ship with black sails.

Mullroy:
Oh, and no ship that’s not crewed by the damned (Jack slips away unnoticed) and captained by a man so evil, hell itself spat him back out could possibly have black sails and so couldn’t possibly be any other ship than the Black Pearl. Is that what you’re saying?

Murtogg:
No.

Mullroy:
Like I said, there’s no real ship as can match the Interceptor.

They look back to see Jack gone. Turning to see him at the wheel of the Interceptor, they run on board, their muskets held out.

Mullroy:
Oi! You! Get away from there! You don’t have permission to be aboard their mate!

Jack:
I’m sorry, but it’s such a pretty boat....ship.

Murtogg:
What’s your name?

Jack:
Smith...Or Smithy if you like.

Mullroy:
(Disbelievingly) What’s your purpose in Port Royal, ‘Mr Smith‘?

Murtogg:
And no lies!

Jack:
Well then, I confess - It is my intention to commandeer one of these ships, pick up a crew in Tortuga, raid, pillage, plunder and otherwise pilfer my weasely black guts out.

Murtogg:
I said no lies!

Mullroy:
I think he’s telling the truth.

Murtogg:
If he were telling the truth he wouldn’t have told us.

Jack:
Unless of course he knew you wouldn’t believe the truth even if he told it to you.
