Cut To: The Fort. The ceremony has ended. People mill around talking as Norrington walks up to Elizabeth.

Norrington:
May I have a moment?

They step out onto one of the battlements, Elizabeth fanning herself as the corset takes it toll in the hot sun.

Norrington:
You look lovely, Elizabeth. I apologize if I seem forward but I… must speak my mind. This promotion throws into sharp relief that which I have not yet achieved - a marriage to a fine woman. You have become a fine woman, Elizabeth .

Elizabeth:
(Struggling for breath) I can’t breathe.

Norrington:
Yes, I’m a bit nervous myself.

She faints falls over battlement without him noticing. Jack is still talking in the ship with the two soldiers.

Jack:
…and then they made me their chief.

They turn to look as Elizabeth hits the water with a splash.

Norrington:
(Suddenly realising she’s gone) Elizabeth? Elizabeth!

Some other soldiers come running at the cry and one stops Norrington who his taking his coat off to prepare to dive in after her.

Soldier:
The rocks! Sir, it’s a miracle she missed them.

Elizabeth slowly sinks.

Jack:
(To Mullroy) Will you be saving her then?

Mullroy:
I can’t swim.

Jack:
A pearl of the King’s Navy you are. (Takes off his hat and anything else that will weigh him down and hands them to the soldiers) Do not lose these.

He dives in to save her, swimming quickly. The medallion makes it way out of where she tucked it earlier and strange ripples begin to appear. A noise is heard, as if it is calling to someone.

Murtogg:
What was that?

The wind suddenly blows up, rippling the flag on the Interceptor. The corpses of the dead pirates Jack saw earlier creak in the breeze. Elizabeth lands on the sea bed just as Jack reaches her. He picks her up and moment’s later they appear at the surface, but she is too heavy in all her clothes and they begin to sink again. Jack rips the dress off of her and they surface again. The wind begins to blow even more fiercely. Jack carries Elizabeth aboard the Interceptor with the help of the two soldiers and lays her on the floor.

Mullroy:
I got her. Not breathing!

Jack:
Move!

He pulls the central piece out of he corset and rips it open. She coughs and splutters back to life as Murtogg catches the corset.

Mullroy:
Never would have thought of that.

Jack:
Clearly you’ve never been to Singapore. (Suddenly he sees the medallion and stares at Elizabeth in surprise) Where did you get that?

Norrington and some other soldiers arrive at the scene. He points his sword straight at Jack.

Norrington:
On your feet.

Governor Swann:
Elizabeth. Are you alright?

He hurriedly helps her to her feet and puts his coat around her.

Elizabeth:
Yes, I’m fine.

Governor Swann looks at Murtogg who is still clutching the corset. He hurried tosses it away and points at Jack.

Governor Swann:
Shoot him!

Elizabeth:
Father! Commodore, do you really intend to kill my rescuer?

After a moment’s pause, they all lower their swords.

Norrington:
I believe thanks are in order. (He holds out his hand for Jack to take, but as he grabs it, he pulls up his sleeve to reveal a ’P’ branded into his skin) Had a brush with the East India Trading company, did we, pirate?

Governor Swann:
Hang him.

Norrington:
Keep your guns on him, men. Gillette , fetch some irons. (He pulls up his sleeve further to reveal the tattoo of a bird) Well, well… Jack Sparrow , isn’t it?

Jack:
Captain Jack Sparrow , if you please, sir.

Norrington:
Well I don’t see your ship…Captain.

Jack:
I’m in the market as it were.

Murtogg:
He said he’d come to commandeer one.

Mullroy:
Told you he was telling the truth. These are his, sir. (Hands him Jack ’s effects)

Norrington:
(Inspecting the pistol) No additional shots nor powder. (Opens the compass) A compass that doesn’t point north. (Unsheathes the sword) And I half expected it to be made of wood. You are, without doubt, the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of.

Jack:
But you have heard of me.

Annoyed, he grabs him and begins to drag him away. Elizabeth follows.

Elizabeth:
Commodore, I really must protest.

Norrington:
(Giving him over to be clapped in irons) Carefully, Lieutenant.

Elizabeth:
Pirate or not this man saved my life.

Norrington:
One good deed is not enough to redeem a man of a lifetime of wickedness.

Jack:
Though it seems enough to condemn him.

Norrington:
Indeed.

Jack:
(As the Lieutenant lets go and he sees his opportunity) Finally.

He throws his irons around Elizabeth ’s neck, who shrieks.

Governor Swann:
No, don’t shoot!

Jack:
I knew you’d warm up to me. Commodore Norrington, my effects, please. And my hat. (When he pauses) Commodore! (Norrington turns to get them) Elizabeth. It is Elizabeth, isn’t it?

Elizabeth:
It’s Miss Swann .

Jack:
Miss Swann , if you’d be so kind. Come, come, dear, we don’t have all day. Now if you’d be very kind. (She attaches everything back to him and puts on his hat) Easy on the goods, darling.

Elizabeth:
You’re despicable.

Jack:
Sticks and stones, love. I saved your life, you saved mine, we’re square. (He turns her back to face the others) Gentlemen, milady, you will always remember this as the day that you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow!

He tosses her to the crowd of men then turns, grabs a rope and kicks the gear holding it so he is hoisted into the air. He swings round on an arm in the air.

Governor Swann:
Now, will you shoot him?

Norrington:
Open fire!

The soldiers fire shots on him until he manages to land on another arm.

Norrington:
On his heels!

The soldiers give chase as Jack uses a rope as a zip line to take him down to the floor with a decent head start. He ducks as more shots are fired at him.

Norrington:
Gillette , Mr. Sparrow has a dawn appointment with the gallows I would hate for him to miss it.

The soldiers set off after him. In the town, they search every house.

Soldier:
Search upstairs. Look lively, men.

Jack is hiding in some dark shadows, and when they’re gone he ducks into the nearest building.
